Young Life College semester recap

by Luke on December 19, 2017

It’s been an exciting semester with Young Life College!
We started off the school year by adding Hannah Silvey as a full-time staff person to focus specifically on the ministry at Mizzou. Our college leadership team grew throughout the semester with the addition of new volunteers who are excited about making an impact in the lives of students at our local colleges and universities. The fall was full of Young Life College clubs and events, not to mention the start of weekly small groups and bi-monthly large group meetings.
One of our favorite experiences of the semester was the weekend trip we took to Clearwater
Cove, where college students from around the region came together to talk about who Jesus is and what He means to us. This was an experience that deeply impacted students as they found new friendships, grew deeper in their faith and some started a relationship with Jesus for the very first time. This semester has been a great success for this growing ministry and we look forward to what the Lord will do in the spring through Young Life College at Mizzou, Columbia College, Stephens, and MACC!

Three camp opportunities this summer!

by Luke on December 13, 2017

This summer, we have not one, not two, but three opportunities to spend time at a Young Life camp.  It’s great to have options! Need help deciding which trip is the best “fit” for you? Talk to your Young Life leader and we can help you make a decision.

Timber Wolf Lake: July 27-August 3. Designed primarily as a 1st time YL camp experience. The best week of your life! In order to make sure as many people as possible can experience YL camp, we are limited in the number of 2nd timers we can bring. We are only allowed to bring 15%, which is 14 total from Hickman, Battle, and Rock Bridge. Cost is $675 if you sign up before February 1st and $725 after that.
Next Step Trip: July 19-23. This trip is for those that have been on a summer camp trip and are ready to take the “next step”. It’s a 5 day trip to Colorado where you will get to go white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, and more. Cost is $499.
Work Crew: Because it’s the longest, we think it’s the best option! Spend 3-4 weeks working at a Young Life camp. You are only responsible for your travel cost – you work in exchange for meals and lodging. Training is held locally in January and applications are due March 1st.  There are sessions available all summer so finding one that works with your summer schedule is easy. It’s competitive to get in and is considered a leadership role within Young Life so it comes with higher expectations.

Next Step Trip

by Luke on December 13, 2017

Already been to a week long Young Life camp? Looking for the NEXT STEP in your faith?  This trip is for YOU!
July 19-23, join us in Buena Vista, CO for a trip of adventure, leadership and plenty of time to connect with each other and with God.  “Basecamp” for all of our adventures will be at Noah’s Ark, where we will stay in Weatherports – sturdy tents with wood floors.  Over the course of the 5 day trip, we will white water raft, rock climb, take on the Noah’s Ark Adventure Course, hike up to the Continental Divide, and spend time growing relationships with each other and with God.
Total trip cost is $499 and includes transportation in mini vans driven by our Young Life Leaders. We will leave early on the morning of July 19th and return late on the 23rd. The only food not covered in the cost is on the way to and from Noah’s Ark (4 total meals).
To register, simply make a $150 deposit online (remainder due June 15th) and email leahelizabethjex@gmail.com with your home address and child’s name and school.

Spend a MONTH at Young Life camp!

by Luke on December 13, 2017

It’s not often in life that we get to evaluate our purpose, map out our future and reflect on our past. As a month-long (sometimes three week sessions are available) volunteer on work crew at a Young Life camp, you’ll have the chance to grow personally and spiritually — you’ll be surrounded by other people from all over the country who, like yourself, really want their lives to count for something and who desire to serve as Jesus did thousands of years ago.

Work crew is the volunteer experience for those in high school. The work crew serves the campers in a variety of ways like dining hall servers, grounds crew and housekeepers.  To be eligible, you must complete our work crew training course in late January.

by Luke on November 29, 2017

Register before February 1st and save $50!

Registration is now open for the best week of your life! This summer, we are headed to Timber Wolf Lake in north Michigan!  We will depart on chartered buses (complete with WiFi and plugins) the night of July 27th and return the morning of August 3rd.  This is the “dead week” for Missouri high school sports, so you won’t have any conflicts with fall sports practice.

The total cost for the trip is $675 if you register before February 1st. After February 1st, the price goes up to $725.  This includes transportation on chartered buses, insurance, lodging, all the activities and excellent food for our entire stay.  The only “extra” money you will need is for food on the bus trip and goods at the gift shop (optional).  We will offer several fund raisers this winter and spring.  Many students have fund raised their entire trip!

All that is required to sign up is a $150 deposit AND a completed registration form.  The deposit is refundable until April 1st when we have to make a financial commitment to Timber Wolf Lake.  In addition, a second payment of $150 is due April 15.  Final payment is due July 1.

  • Registration for first timers opens November 29th.
  • Registration for second timers opens January 15th.
  • Second timers: we can only bring 15% (approximately 14 students from Columbia) of this trip as second timers per Young Life’s policy. We want to encourage you to attend the Next Step Trip to Colorado as well as consider Work Crew.
  • Those in financial need can apply online for a Camp Scholarship.  The application is due March 31st.
  • We offer a sibling discount of $100/person if more than one sibling registers.

Two ways to sign up:

1. The old fashioned way: bring your $150 cash or check deposit and paper registration form (handed out at club) to club or mail it to: Young Life, P.O. Box 10144, Columbia, MO 65205. Checks should be made payable to “Young Life”.

2. The new fashioned way (preferred): ONLINE…sign up on the form below AND pay your $150 deposit online.

YoungLives Informational Meetings

by Luke on November 28, 2017

Do you have a heart for teen moms? If so, we could use your help!

We are exploring the possibility of starting a YoungLives program in Columbia. YoungLives is Young Life’s ministry to teen moms.  Through Young Life’s time-tested methods and life-on-life mentoring, teen moms are empowered to make positive choices, set and achieve goals, and live a future rooted in Christ.

We will be hosting two informational meetings in the hopes to accommodate as many schedules as possible.

  • Sunday, December 3rd at 11:15am at The Crossing church in room 319 (in the Student Center)
  • Monday, December 4th at 12:00pm at The Crossing church in room 225. Childcare and lunch will be provided for this meeting.

We are looking for people that would like to serve in one of 4 ways:

  • Mentors: Women who will commit to pursuing and loving teen moms through contact work at events and one-on-one.
  • Committee: A group of adults who work behind the scenes by fundraising, providing transportation, bringing dinner, event/club planning, and encouraging mentors and staff.
  • Childcare volunteers: Men and women who provide a safe and caring atmosphere for children of teen moms.
  • Prayer: A network of local adults who are committed to praying regularly and encouraging others to pray for the needs of YoungLives.

If you are interested in serving or want more information, please contact Gretchen Shults at gretchenshults@gmail.com.
